Can I install my own fence?

DIY fencing is the perfect way to enhance privacy and security, establish property lines, and even increase your home’s value. Thankfully, many of today’s DIY fencing kits are much easier to install than you’d think. This article will help you navigate a DIY fence installation, including the full installation process, choosing the correct tools and materials, and customising your fence to your exact specifications.

Getting started

Before you start building, it’s important to consider the purpose of the fence and how it will fit into your yard. Here are the first few steps steps you should take to plan your fence layout –

What is the purpose of your fence?

Think about why you’re building the fence. Is it for privacy, boundaries, security, pet enclosure, or garden decoration? Identifying the purpose will guide your design, intended size and material choices. You should also assess the area you need to be fenced, taking into account factors like the ground level, which affects post placement and reinforcement needs.

Adhering to codes and regulations

Another important tip is to research local building codes and regulations before you start your fence project. Check for utility lines that could be affected and the maximum allowed fence height.

Use a trusted fencing supplier

Once you know the size, style and purpose of your fence, you can go ahead and order it. Most fencing specialists will guide you through the process, to help you get everything you need.

Buy fence supplies

After you’ve planned out and measured everything, make sure you have all the necessary tools, including a post hole digger, auger, or circular saw.

Measuring and marking

You’re ready to get started. The first step is to measure the size of the fence you need –

Measure the length

Using a tape measure, start at one corner and measure along the desired fence line, keeping the tape at least 30 centimetres away from obstacles like trees. Mark these obstacles for later removal if necessary. Record all measurements to help with purchasing supplies and post placement.

Lay out your fence

Once your delivery arrives, it’s time to space everything out before digging the posts into the ground. First, space out the panels. This will help you to mark out where your posts will need to go. Because your fence arrives premade, it makes the process of marking your post spots much easier. Use string lines or spray paint to mark the post locations and lay out the fence in its entirety. Once you can see where everything should be set, it’s time to start digging.

Digging the post holes

With your fence plan and post locations marked, the next step is digging the post holes. Properly dug holes are key to having sturdy, lasting posts.

Preparation

Ensure that you are wearing the appropriate safety gear, such as gloves and a hard hat. Clear any large roots that might affect post stability, and make sure you locate any underground utilities to avoid causing any damage to them.

Digging post holes

Use a post-hole digger or power auger to dig holes deep enough to support the fence, typically one-third to one-half the height of the fence. Adjust depth based on soil type, with sandy soils requiring deeper holes. Make the holes wider at the bottom to prevent tipping. Ensure all holes are uniform in depth and width for consistent installation.

Position posts in concrete

For a sturdy fence, position the posts in concrete. This step is crucial for ensuring the fence remains solid and secure.

Mixing the concrete

Mix quick-drying cement with water to a thick, paste-like consistency according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Ensure the right water-to-cement ratio for effective usage.

Place the Fence Posts

Place posts in the holes with a partner’s help. Use a post-level to ensure posts are plumb and level. Adjust the depth and width of post holes as needed.

Pour the Concrete into the Post Holes

Fill the holes with concrete, tamping it down to remove air pockets. Ensure the concrete reaches ground level and is smooth. Depending on weather conditions, allow the concrete to set for 10 to 24 hours.

Install the panels and posts

Installing a premade fence yourself is straightforward. Once you receive the fence, it will come with premade posts and panels, custom-made to your exact specifications. Start by spacing the posts according to the length of each panel.

Then, simply bolt the panels to each post, ensuring they are securely fastened. By following these steps, you can easily set up your new fence, providing a sturdy and attractive boundary for your property.

Attach Post Caps

Attaching post caps protects posts from weather elements and adds a polished look to your fence.

Prepping the posts

Before applying the caps, clean the post tops and apply silicone caulk to protect them from moisture.

Install the post caps

Place the caps on the posts, ensuring they are level and centred. Secure with carpenter glue, screws, or nails, pre-drilling holes to avoid splitting.

Check for stability

Ensure the post caps are securely attached and stable. Add extra glue or screws if necessary, and repeat for each post cap, ensuring each is level and straight.
